Ad Spotlight: Compassion International

Sponsor a Child in Jesus Name with Compassion

If you are unfamiliar with Compassion International, then you’ve probably been living on the dark side of the moon. For those of you who may not know, Compassion International works with local churches all over the world to help children overcome poverty. When you choose a child to sponsor, you can rest assured knowing that a majority of the money that you send it is going to directly help the child you’ve chosen. While I have not personally been to the areas where Compassion does its work, I have a number of close friends who have, and they have attested to the amazing work that Compassion is doing to combat poverty one child at a time.

If you don’t already sponsor a child through Compassion or some other organization, I challenge you to consider taking it on. I know that some of you may not be able to do so at this time, but you might be able to in the future. Some of you already sponsor a child or children… are you able to sponsor another? We may not be able to end poverty on our own, but we can all do something.

A little while back, I coordinated a blogging project with a number of contributors and posted a chapter by chapter review of Too Small to Ignore. Too Small to Ignore is written by Wess Stafford, the president of Compassion International. You can link to all of the reviews here and get a feeling of the heart that Stafford has for children.

Whatcha Doing in October 2011?

Well, I’ve got some dates for you to put down on your calendar! October 7-10, Group will be hosting its first-ever kidmin confernece, and its called — what else? — Kidmin. Beginning Wednesday, December 1, you’ll be able to check out all the amazing tracks being led by some amazing kidmin leaders that will be made available at the conference on the Kidmin Conference website.

You’re probably wondering, “Why should I budget the limited money (if I have any this year) I have to go to this conference?” Well, I’ve been to many a conference, and most of the time you sit in an auditorium and then in a classroom passively listening to an expert motivate me or give me information. Group’s Kidmin conference is intentionally being designed to facilitate interaction, discussion, and networking. There will be multiple times throughout the conference for you to get together with other churches just like yours to share insights with each other.

You won’t want to miss the inaugural Kidmin Conference. Save the dates: October 7-10, 2011. Save the location: Chicago. Check out the site: Spread the word!

You can also follow updates about the conference on Facebook.

Look, Mother! I’ve Taken Over Henry’s Blog!

Hello, Michael Here! What’s that, Pierre? We shouldn’t be blogging on Henry’s page? Well how else would we be able to tell everyone about the Launch of the What’s in the Bible? Curriculum. Have Mother drive us to their houses? There is no way she’ll do that, Pierre. Well because she is a busy lady and has lots of errands to run today. What do you mean, Pierre? Hacking someone’s blog isn’t wrong to do if you have something really important to say… Mother, would you tell these blog readers that we hacked Henry’s site to tell everyone that the What’s in the Bible? Curriculum launched this week? It’s really great for kids at church!

Check it out! And if you want to buy the full 4-week set for your church, enter my name, michael, at check out and receive 10% off!

Press play, Mother. I think these people want to watch a video of me. No, Mother its the button in the middle of the screen that says “Play Video”…

Children’s Ministry Recruiting Help From Dubya

Need children’s ministry volunteers? Ever thought of having a former president help you out with that?

My friend Nevan Hooker from Minister’s Label had this video put together tho help you on your next children’s ministry recruitment campaign. I thought it was pretty fun. Why bother with trying to get the actual George W to speak at your church? Just think of all the logistics of having to deal with the Secret Service! Simply download this video from Worship House Kids and use it for your next creative volunteer recruitment campaign.

Spread the word! Tell everyone you know about this fun video!

A Prayer Request

(photo uploaded to Flickr by gerlos)

For those of you who might not already know, my family is taking a huge step of faith and leaving Thunder Bay, ON for California. You can read more about that move here.

We are leaving Canada this Friday, June 25 and planning on arriving in California on June 30. We thought we had secured housing. We were simply waiting for a lease agreement to sign. This morning, I received a phone call from the landlord stating that his wife no longer wants to rent the house out… Yep, you read that correctly… no house… I’d like to type some choice words, but this is a children’s ministry blog…

Anyway, I’m asking for those of you in the Elemental CM community to please pray for our family. This move, alone, is stressful. Now with this rental falling through after talking with the landlord for a week, our stress is multiplied. Please pray that we find someplace to rent and soon. Please pray that we have peace in the midst of this.

If any of you have any connection in the San Francisco East Bay (preferably the Concord area) or know of anyone who might have connections, please email me at henry(at)zonios(dot)org.

We rest in the fact that we know this move IS what God wants. It’s the “adventures” on this Wild Goose Chase that are challenging! Thanks for your prayers.

TOMS One Day Without Shoes

I know that this isn’t necessarily directly related to children’s ministry… but it could be! I just found out about this! TOMS Shoes has declared Thursday, April 8 as One Day Without Shoes day as a way to bring awareness to the plight of millions all over the world (including children) who don’t have shoes to wear. The idea is to go a day or part of the day without shoes. I’m planning on doing it, and if I can do it with weather being in the lower 50′s, you can do it, too.

Check out the site for ways you can take part in the day. They also have some ways for those who can’t go shoeless to participate.
