Happy Earth Day!

Earth Day 2007 Call of the Unknown 2 crop, originally uploaded by Fractal Artist.

Today is Earth Day. Whether you think that is silly thing or not, you had better be aware of the impact environmentalism has on kids. If there is any group that has done an amazing job of capturing the attention and passion of children, it is the “green” movement. They’ve been able to craft very simple and compelling messages that all ages can understand. Not only that, they’ve been able to empower kids and adults to be able to do SOMETHING that can positively reverse the negative affects of climate change.

Take a look at this article about kids and Earth Day. Now, while kids may not understand all the aspects of what it means to be green, they are catching onto bits and pieces and acting. The thing to catch here, though is the response of environmentalists, as a group. They don’t point out all the things kids are missing. They highlight what they ARE getting and building upon that.

Whatever you think about Earth Day or environmentalism or climate change, you can learn something in how they have successfully called kids to action over the years. I still remember the commercials and billboards and cartoons that espoused responsibility to for the environment when I was a kid 20… OK, 30 years ago.

Happy Earth Day!

    Do you remember Captain Planet?
That was environmental propaganda at its best.
An entire generation remembers the theme song… that's got to say something!
