Thanks for the comments. I guess I sounded pretty negative :) My issue is not on the faith practices they are looking at. I think they are very good. My issue is in their implementation. Thanks for clarifying that.

I also like your goals that you have for your parents. Everything we do here at Redwood is filtered through the loving God and loving others. It's our goal to help kids and families and volunteers (and everyone we come in contact with in CM for that matter) to know who God is, how much he loves them, how they can best follow him to have the most amazing life and how they can change the world around them as they follow God.

As for Orange... I wish I was going. It would be great to meet all of you who I've interacted with online in person, but, alas, it is not meant to be :) Maybe another time :)

I love your thoughts. I've read Holeman's book and appreciate the goal. I agree with you that Ventura's method of delivery isn't great. Certainly won't work at my church.

However, I challenge your thoughts on what is being taught in these annual sessions. If you look through the reproducible curriculum that Holeman and Teixeira produced you'll see that the skills they introduce are practical and fit the context of any family. (I.e. the habit of blessing your child/ money management/ bible study) These habits lack cultural/economical boundaries. The method by which they teach it may not work for every family... that I agree. But the actual skill is invaluable to ANY family.

I agree with your comments about the common attitude Children's Pastors can have regarding the perceived laziness of parents. I was guilty of that myself. God has shown me the past few years that parents want meaningful relationships with their kids. They just feel ill-equipped to make that happen.

Some steps we're taking at LifeChurch is greater partnership with parents in major milestones (I.e. Child Dedications, Baptisms), providing practical resources (I.e. books, videos, websites), getting inside their small groups to encourage inter-generational activities. One of the biggest things is coaching the parents to
1.) understand that God has called us to do 2 things: Love Him with everything we have. Love others as much as we love ourselves
2.) our goal as parents is to raise our kids to do the same
3.) our demonstration of loving God and loving others influences our kids the most.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Can't wait to meet you at Orange!
