Children’s Ministry in a Missional Paradigm Series: Defining Missional

a child’s world, originally uploaded by sarmax.

If you didn’t read my first post on this blog series, you can go here to find out what this series is all about.

As we begin our look into an ethos of children’s ministry within a missional paradigm, we need to be clear on what we mean by missional. Missional is a term that gets thrown around a lot in the Emergent Village and emerging church movements. It gets used in many other places as well, but what does it mean for our purposes.

Alan Hirsch says this about the term missional: “‘Missional’ Christianity is about faithfully contextualizing the unchanging gospel message in a given culture.”

This understanding of missional broadens the paradigm to fit cross culturally as well as has the potential to be a long-lasting lens from which to approach ministry. It isn’t about a certain form or manifestation of church as much as it is making the gospel message real and understandable to different cultures at different times through different people.

What are your thoughts on trying to define “missional?” Is Hirsch’s definition too broad? How would you define it when beginning to approach an ethos on children’s ministry that is missional?

I am new to your blog and still thinking through missional living. I am not sure that we will ever be able to make the gospel message understandable. The gospel message takes on meaning through experience. Many times we don’t understand it at all but know through experience that it is true. I could get on board with your thinking if the sentence read something like, “it is making the gospel message real and experiencing the reign/leading of God in different cultures at different times through different people.”
